Welcome to Solent Sailing School of Yachting

At Solent Sailing we concentrate on the practical side of sailing. We operate out of Hamble Point Marina and use some of the most comfortable Yachts available.

Solent Sailing is owned and run by Alex Day. With over 40 years’ sailing experience and a love of being on the water, Alex enjoys sharing his knowledge and expertise with an enthusiastic crew. Married with 4 children, Alex understands that skills don’t always come quickly or easily, but with patience the rewards are worth striving for.

Solent Sailing is a small school with a carefully selected team of highly qualified skippers, all of whom aim to have fun afloat, whilst teaching as much as  possible and allowing you to enjoy the thrill of sailing in the knowledge that you are being well looked after and kept safe.

What's different about us?

We run our courses over 6 days (instead of the usual 5) with a maximum of 4 pupils. With many other sailing schools the majority of teaching is undertaken in hard working, well utilised yachts with 5 pupils aboard.

We believe a maximum of 4 pupils works best, giving more time for all to practice those new manoeuvres, and each their own bunk to sleep on! The extra day also affords the opportunity to visit more of the interesting places in the Solent and beyond, and still leave time to have a lot of fun.

At Solent Sailing we don’t believe in listing courses for the year and then having to fill them up, We much prefer to build courses around our customers’ specific requirements. When to go, where to go, which course to take, for how long, with whom? These are just some of the criteria necessary to build into each course, holiday or training session, and with which we can help.

RYA Sailing Courses.

We run RYA practical courses, from Start Yachting for the new recruit, to Yachmaster Preparation weeks for those near the top of their game and who want to pass their Yachtmaster Exam.

We also use ‘Polly Agatha’ a new replica 45’ Pilot Cutter, for those who favour learning in the traditional style of yachting, and conduct Competent Crew & Watch Leader courses on her.

Own Boat Tuition, Small Groups or One to One Coaching

Solent Sailing specialises in bespoke coaching, having found in the past that our students welcomed that little extra time spent with them. Students then have the opportunity to focus on particular aspects of the course, having previously mastered others.

A good example is a family group with specific requirements. The extra time means the course can easily be tailored for them whilst still leaving time to complete the syllabus.

Yacht Deliveries

For us the joy of sailing is in the variety offered by the sport. Past clients have asked us to deliver their yachts to many distant shores and we are happy to offer this service to all.

Skippered Charter Weekends and Holidays.

Charter a larger and more luxurious yacht, with a fully qualified skipper, to enjoy the experience of sailing further afield, whether for a weekend or a longer holiday. The skipper’s knowledge will help you visit some of the marvelous harbours and anchorages around our coast, or across the channel, that you may not reach with just your family and friends as crew.

Corporate Sailing & Racing.

We are well known for providing racing and cruising yachts, with corporate hospitality, at some of the best known regattas, such as Cowes Week and the Round the Island Race, as well as individual company sailing days and corporate sailing events.
